William was born in 1897 to Ellis and Sarah Woods of Douglas, Isle of Man. He attended Douglas Grammar School and when war broke out he was an apprentice to MR. H. Herrinsh, a Chemist at Douglas. From February to October 1916 William was a member of the University Officer Training Corps before enlisting with the London Regiment with who he went to Salonica, Malta and Palestine. He was wounded during his service and in September 1918 he was killed.
