Percy was the second son of Peter and Ann Gerrard of Leigh, Lancashire. He was schooled at Lowton Independent Methodist School and Leigh Grammar School. In 1911 he entered Manchester University and graduated in 1914 with a Bachelor of Science. After his studies he became an assistant master at Whalley Range. From October 1914 to October 1915 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps and in 1915 he enlisted with the Lancashire Fusiliers. He served in Salonica and France and was killed in October 1918. He left a wife and one child.
He may have attained the rank of Lance-Coporal, but this is not recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves entry.
