Charles was the son of Charles T. , a travelling tea and coffee salesman, and Martha H. Brocklehurst , of Heaton Chapel. He was born in 1900, educated at Hulme Grammar School and took up a post with Greg Bros. , Manchester before entering Manchester University to study textiles. In January 1918 he joined the University Officer Training Corps. He died of influenza and pneumonia in November 1918 as the war was drawing to a close and before seeing any active service. He was buried at Codnor Parish Church, Derbyshire, near his mother’s family.
