Joseph was the son of Dr. William Waite and his wife Ellen. He was born in 1870 at Halifax, educated at Bootham School in York, and was a medical student at Manchester University between 1886 and 1888 and a resident of Dalton Hall. Afterwards he went to Edinburgh Medical School and took his L.R.C.P.S. (Licentiate of the Royal College Physicians & Surgeons) in 1896. He spent some time as Medical Officer to the West African Medical Staff in Northern Nigeria.

When war broke out Joseph was in General Practice at Pluckley, Kent, where he had been commissioned into the East Kent Regiment in April 1913, and died during the Battle of Kut on 21st January 1916.
