James was born 8th June 1892 to Sarah Tipping.  He was educated at Hebden National School and took evening classes at Hebden Technical School. With four and a half years weaving experience, he entered Manchester University in 1914 as a Drapers Company Scholar. He passed the 1st Year Textile course, and registered in 1915-16 for 2nd Year Textiles. He enlisted in December 1915 and served with the West Riding Regiment and York and Lancaster Regiment. His brother G.A. Tipping is noted as his next of kin by the Commonwealth War Graves. He served and died on the Western Front.
