Fred was born on 7th September 1888 at Rastrick, son of Edward Firth (Twiner) of 29 Camm Street, Brighouse, Yorks. He was educated at Longroyd and Common School, Rastrick; and Brighouse Technical School. With 13 years experience working in Cotton Doubling, he entered Manchester University in 1912 as a West Riding Scholar and in 1915 was awarded Cert. Tech. (Textile Industries). He was a member of the Manchester Universtiy Officer Training Corps from 12th October 1914 to 2nd July 1915. He was wounded during his service and died in August 1918 at Pozieres, France. He left effects worth £178 1s 10d to his father (probate records list him as 11th Battalion and 2nd Lieutenant).
