Charles was born in 1898 to John David and Anne Greenwood. He attended Accrington Secondary School and Silcoates Colleage, Wakefield. He was an assistant cotton mill manager when war broke out and a member of the University Officer Training Corps from June 1916 to July 1917 when he was gazetted to the Royal Naval Service. He drowned when his sea plane crashed off the East coast of the UK in March 1918. He left effects worth £156 11s 2d to his father.
