Alfred enlisted as a private on 29th August 1914, was gazetted in January 1915 and became a Lewis gun officer. He died near High Wood on the Somme in late July 1916. Shortly before his death he had been offered a captaincy, but he turned it down because of his attachment to the men whom he commanded. He left effects worth £379 0s 4d to his father.
