William was born on 15th December 1890, the son of Robert Lowe. He was educated at Daisy Hill, Westhoughton and Bolton Secondary School and entered Manchester University in 1909 taking his BSc. and Teaching Certificate in 1912.
William was a member of the University Officer Training Corps from February 1910 to October 1914 and joined the army in November 1914. He was killed at La Boiselle on 5th July 1916.
