Joseph was born on 10th November 1882 at Cheetham, Manchester. He was the elder son of Alderman Sir Edward Holt, Brewer and ex-Lord Mayor of Manchester, of Woodthorpe, Prestwich, Manchester and Blackwell, Windermere and his wife Elizabeth Brooks. Joseph was educated at Rugby School and Christ Church, Oxford. He attended The Tech in the 1909-10 session as an evening student of electrical engineering when he was living in Prestwich and working as a Brewer.

Joseph joined the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Manchester Regiment in 1904 and qualified in musketry. After the re-organisation of 1907 which introduced the Territorial Force his unit became the 6th Battalion Manchester Regiment. He was promoted to Captain on 20th December 1911 and was killed in the Battle of Krithia.
